By the time he was almost 16, Noah had realized his relationship with his best friend, Luke, was anything but normal. The two had met when they were only 11, and sure, they hadn't exactly hit it off from the start, but they started getting closer after their initial meetings. They spent a lot of time together....staying up late, watching movies, walking to the beach or the park, spending the holidays at each others homes, calling each other at least 3 times a day, texting on a regular basis......It wasn't an unusual thing for Noah to randomly show up at Luke's house and announce that he was spending the night. It only made sense for them to consider themselves best friends. But despite how close they became, they still spent a lot of time arguing over stupid matters. Arguments over what movies to watch, what they should have for dinner, which singer sang the best on American Idol.....they were never an odd thing between them. Besides that, Luke loved calling Noah names, which he would respond to by calling Luke "girly," or "adorable," or "excessively feminine," terms Luke didn't exactly appreciate being called. Though as cheesy as it sounded, fighting with Luke had actually helped Noah understand him more, and in the end he always ended up learning more about Luke. Through their fights, Noah had learned that Luke hated the dark, spiders, rats, bugs, obnoxious, selfish, or stuck up people, and when he was upset or nervous, he actually refused to eat. Noah found Luke incredibly interesting, if not mysterious. Luke was like a huge puzzle to him...that he wanted to solve so badly, but he always found that he was missing a piece. Either way, he accepted all of his friend's weird behaviors and quirks. Sometimes, the two would be in the middle of a conversation, and Luke would randomly space out, his gaze focused on something Noah couldn't see. Sometimes, Luke would suddenly burst out crying, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably as he sobbed into his knees. It was times like these that Noah felt incredibly useless. He wanted so much to help his friend, but he never knew what to say, because Luke would refuse to talk about it later, or get angry if Noah tried to approach the subject. So instead, Noah would gather Luke in his arms and hold him tightly against his chest, rocking them slowly. He would cradle Luke until he fell asleep, his breathing finally calm and quiet. All the while, Noah would never stop whispering soothing words in his friend's ear. It was all he could do. Whenever it would start showering slightly outside, Luke would quietly walk to the window and watch the rain, his palm settled against the glass. After a while, he would open the window and step outside, barefoot and without a jacket. He would start spinning around in circles and tilting his head upwards, allowing the rain full access to his face. Sometimes, Noah would join him, but most of the time, he'd stay inside and watch......mesmerized. Sometimes when they were alone, Luke would randomly lay his head on Noah's shoulder, or randomly reach out and grab Noah's hands, as if making sure Noah wouldn't leave him. Noah responded each time, whether it was wrapping his arms tightly around Luke or interlocking their fingers. They never exchanged any words or looks, but silently agreed to sit there in the peace and quiet, enjoying each others company. It was these moments that confused Noah the most. Normally, Luke was loud, expressive, and quick to fire insults, especially towards Noah. But during those peaceful moments when it was just the two of them, Luke was quiet and unresponsive, and....vulnerable, a deep contrast from his usual self. And Noah found himself falling more and more in love with Luke with each and every passing day. He knew there was no way to prevent it, and he accepted that, rather than try to fight his feelings or convert himself. But it was difficult dealing with Luke sometimes, despite how much Noah loved him. The boy had excessive mood swings on a regular basis, and sometimes Noah didn't know which Luke he'd see next, from the cheerful Luke who cracked jokes, to the grumpy Luke who just wanted to punch Noah's lights out. Whenever he came face to face with the angry Luke, they would start yelling at each other, and Noah would call Luke names, causing Luke to burst into tears, all the while accusing Noah of being horrible. They had an unspoken rule in which one of them had to apologize within 24 hours, and it was usually Noah. He'd hug Luke tightly, kissing everything from his cheeks, forehead, to his lips, and Luke would forgive him. Sometimes, when the fights were really bad, Noah would bring chocolate and flowers with him, two things he knew would melt Luke's heart. Although, Noah still couldn't help but wonder why in the world they put up with each other. Why they even bothered, when the two were so opposite and often ended up arguing because they never saw eye-to-eye. He finally decided it was simply because he loved Luke too much to let him go. And he figured by the way Luke let only Noah become close to him, and by the tender way Luke loved to caress Noah's lips....that he felt the exact same way. By the time he was 16, Noah had realized his relationship with Luke was anything but normal...because the two themselves were anything but normal. But they accepted each other, despite their flaws, and loved each other in spite of their imperfections. And Noah wouldn't do a thing to change them. Please comment!
