Gay couple kisses on ‘As the World Turns’
Fans accused soap opera of censoring male liplocks
By MATT SCHAFER, Southern Voice | Apr 23, 7:26 PM

After 214 days and an e-mail campaign by angry fans that generated international coverage, the gay teen couple on CBS soap opera “As The World Turns” finally got to share their third on-screen kiss.

During the episode that aired April 23, Luke (Van Hansis), and Noah (Jake Silbermann) went shopping for the birthday of a woman Noah married so she could get a green card. As they finished their shopping they pulled closely together and shared a series of quick, passionate kisses.

In 2007, the couple came out together in a move that won acclaim from gay media watchdogs and found a large and vocal following. After coming out, the couple, coined “Nuke” by fans, have kissed only twice. Until today.

After four months with no lip lock, fans took action and began contacting media outlets. Entertainment organizations and gay newspapers ran stories, as did the New York Times, the Associated Press, the Boston Globe and the Toronto Star, among many others. CNN held a panel discussion about the campaign.

“We certainly have gotten letters and phone calls from fans; it is not unusual to receive a letter or a email about a certain relationship,” Jeannie Tharrington, a spokesperson for Proctor & Gamble Productions, said during the campaign. “We’re not unaccustomed to getting phone calls, but normally they don’t contact the media.”

Proctor & Gamble produces the show for CBS.

Fan reaction to the smooch on websites like vanhansis.net, which launched the media campaign, has been positive, with a slight undertone of hoping the next kiss isn’t another 214 days away. Fans are now encouraging members to thank the media and Proctor & Gamble Productions.
